        Part one.Admission Requirements and Length of Program

        1. Admission Requirement: Accredited Senior High School Graduates with qualified University Entrance Examination score

        2. Length of Program: Three years 

        Part two.Training Objectives and Career Orientation

        1.  Training Objectives

        The primary goal of the Nursing Program is to fulfill the motto of Suzhou Health College “Respect People and Cause, Be Excellent and Cordial”. The Nursing Department strives to develop applied health talents with modern healthcare skills within a framework of profound reverence for the great and long traditions of the past and the core values of Chinese society, the high moral standards, professional ethics, team spirit, and a lifelong commitment to personal development and learning. Moreover, not only do the nursing students acquire the practical knowledge and technical skills necessary for a career in nursing and other allied professional specialities, but more importantly, the ability to adapt to a rapidly changing world and the steady advancements of the nursing field of study and the nursing profession. Most of all, the Nursing Department course of study provides a supportive and nurturing  approach to the moral, intellectual, physical  and aesthetic development of the complete student, and aims to produce a graduate who is resilient and embodies the cherished Chinese cultural values of care, cooperation, and independence.    

        2.  Career Orientation

        Nursing graduates are in high demand today and have excellent employment opportunities in a variety of healthcare positions and agencies which promote better health, including public and private hospitals, community healthcare services, nursing homes, social welfare agencies, mental health facilities, and hospices, as well as overseas employment.

        3.  Professional Ability Requirements 

        Upon successful completion of the nursing program, the student will demonstrate the following skills and competencies:

        (1) A basic understanding and appreciation of the honored tradition and humanitarian spirit of medical care with a command of the scientific method and practical skills as well as a strong work ethic of collaboration and care;good professional ethics with the spirit of wholehearted dedication to human health career;

        (2)Mastery of the fundamental theory and practices of the nursing profession and humanism, and the knowledge associated with the other medical disciplines.

        (3)Basic and advanced nursing skills performed in a correct, proficient, meticulous and patient manner.

        (4)The proper role of nursing in providing holistic care for a wide variety of patients with common and chronic illnesses and diseases.

        (5)Emergency management and cooperative rescue skills for the patients with acute and critical injuries and illnesses.

        (6)  Awareness of the effects and potential side-effects of commonly used medications. 

        (7)  Ability to conduct health education and healthcare workshops and classes.

        (8)Awareness and understanding of scientific research methods and nursing management skills.

        (9)  Mastery of essential computer skills and medical office equipment.

        (10)  English proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

        (11)  Awareness and understanding of nursing related policy and law, occupational safety and environmental protection.

        (12)  A healthy body, sound mind and judgment, strong interpersonal skills, environmental adaptability, innovative and creative spirit. 

        (13)  Mastery of basic theories of nursing ethics and psychological nursing, good autonomous learning capabilities, understanding of nursing development, possess of evidence-based nursing ability and reflective thinking habit.

        Part three.Curriculum  (A period equals to a 40-minute class)

        I.Compulsory Courses:   

        1. General Compulsory Courses   

        (1) Ideological and Moral Accomplishment & Fundamentals of Law 

        Content includes: The course covers the important basic ideas and views of Marxism-Leninism, the Thought of Mao Zedong, the Theories of Deng Xiaoping, and the idea of “The Three Representatives” of Jiang Zeming. It will help students to establish the correct outlook on life, values, morality and law.

        (2) Maoism & Introduction of Socialist Theory System with Chinese Characteristics

        Content includes:Basic ideas and method of Marxism, fundermental theories, routes, principles and history of the Communist Party, and fundermental theories, routes and experience of Chinese Socialism.

        (3) Physical Education and Health

        Option 1 ---Basketball

        Content includes: Basic theory of physical education and health care knowledge; theoretical knowledge about basketball; moving, passing, dribbling and shooting of basketball; running and breaking through with basketball; one-to-one defense and attack, give-and-go cooperation, post trailer play cooperation, rebound, passing and receiving, fast attack and basic strategy of two-to-one, three-to-one, three-to two.

        Option 2 ---Volleyball

        Content includes: Basic theory of physical education and health care knowledge; theoretical knowledge about volleyball; ready position and moving; digging, passing and serving the ball; lineup arrangement; strategy of attack and defense.

        Option 3 --- Football

        Content includes: Basic theory of physical education and health care knowledge; theoretical knowledge about football; playing, dribbling and stopping the ball, header, intercept and throw-in; strategy of individual, attack and defense; protection and covering in partial defense, crosscourt defense, combination defense, off-side skill; ways , rules of competition and code of arbitrage.

        Option 4 --- Table Tennis

        Content includes: Basic theory of physical education and health care knowledge; theoretical knowledge about table tennis; step technique, serving, receiving, blocking, chopping, attacking and doubles; basic strategy, arrangements and ways of contest.

        Option 5 --- Badminton

        Content includes: Basic theory of physical education and health care knowledge; theoretical knowledge about badminton; gripping, serving and receiving, batting of the ball, step method; strategy of single and doubles.

        Option 6 --- Aerobics

        Content includes: Basic theory of physical education and health care knowledge; theoretical knowledge about aerobics; movement of neck, shoulder, arms, body, legs, kneeling, sitting, lying and propping up; seven basic stepping methods of aerobics; sequences and routines; Latin-aerobics, Step-aerobics routines.

        Option 7 --- Medical Sports & Sports Dance

        Content includes: Basic theory of physical education and health care knowledge; theoretical knowledge about Medical Sports & Sports Dance; step, legs, hands movement, basic skills of Wushu, different ways of dancing; melody; practice of Qigong; self-defense for women, Taiji routines, routines of different dancing including Latin.

        Option 8 --- Tennis

        Content includes: Basic theory of physical education and health care knowledge; theoretical knowledge about Tennis; introduction to tennis, gripping, serving and receiving tennis, ready position and basic stepping; making a bounce an volley with forehand and backhand; skills of smash and lob; strategy of single.

        Option 9 --- Taekwondo

        Content includes: Basic theory of physical education and health care knowledge; theoretical knowledge about Taekwondo; voice training; stepping and basic pose in Taekwondo practice; skills of attack and integration.

        Option 10 --- Wushu

        Content includes: Basic theory of physical education and health care knowledge; theoretical knowledge about Wushu; introduction to Wushu; fundamental action, group action of Wushu; elementary Changquan and Jianshu; simplified 24-pattern Taijiquan.

        Option 11 --- Skating

        Content includes: Basic theory of physical education and health care knowledge; theoretical knowledge about skating; imitation practice on land; elementary skating and skating in a curve; normal slipping, braking, speed stating and slipping; figure stating.

        Option 12 --- Orienteering

        Content includes: Basic theory of physical education and health care knowledge; theoretical knowledge about orienteering; historical development and features of orienteering; use of maps and skills of upsloping, downsloping, forest crossing, positioning and choosing of reference and route.

        Option 13 --- Yoga

        Content includes: Basic theory of physical education and health care knowledge; theoretical knowledge about Yoga; historical development, basic skills and benefit of yoga; the breathing, yogic meditation, body position and action combination.

        Option 14 --- Physical Training

        Content includes: Basic theories of Physical Education and knowledge of health care, basic elements and moves, jumps, steps and so on.

        Option 15 --- Physical Dancing

        Basic theories of Physical Education and knowledge of health care, national and international dancing.

        (4) English     

        Content includes: Students are supposed to expand their vision,cultivate their critical thinking and have a command of 5,000 English words.

        2. Professional Compulsory Courses 

        (5) Nursing Applied Anatomy

        Content includes: The fundamental principles, knowledge and skills related to the making-up, form and structures, and systems of the human body. The knowledge and skills gained in this course represent the the foundation and the basic building block for the other medical and nursing courses.   

        (6) Nursing Applied Physiology

        Content includes: The function and regulatory mechanisms of the normal functional activities of human body: the organs and systems, the integral inter-relationships and unity, and the relationship between the human body and the environment. The knowledge developed in this course provides the educational platform and the pre-requisite for the advanced level clinical medicine courses. 

        (7) Biochemistry

        Content includes: The structures, functions and cellular metabolism of the three main nutrients, the water-electrolyte balance and the energy metabolism. The knowledge developed in this course provides the necessary foundation for the advanced level courses.

        (8) Etiological Biology & Immunology 

        Content includes: The fundamental knowledge of basic immunology, pathogenic microorganisms, social psychological pathogenic factors, human parasites, etc. The knowledge developed in this course provides the necessary foundation for the advanced level courses and disease prevention.

        (9) Pathology 

        Content includes: The fundamental rules of disease development and the etiology and pathology of common diseases. This course enables the student to focus on the knowledge and its application to daily life and clinical nursing, while improving the understanding of health and disease as well as its application to pathology.

        (10) Pharmacology

        Content includes: The introduction, application, interaction and side-effects of various common drugs and medications with a fundamental knowledge of drug monitoring procedures. This course provides students with a basic knowledge of the standard medical formulary. 

        (11) Nursing Introduction

        Content includes: The concept of professional career and idea, methods of career management. This course helps students to think and manage their own nursing career.

        (12) Health Assessment

        Content includes: The basic methods to collect health documents including inquiry, physical checking, psychological assessment, normal laboratory examination, imaging examination and electrocardiograph examination. The course is designed to enable students to demonstrate health assessment skills by utilizing the nursing process.  

        (13) Fundamental Theories & Skills of Nursing

        Contents includes: The foundational concepts of nursing, the qualities, behavior code, functions and roles of the nurse, the nursing process, the application of human mechanics in nursing, and basic skills, especially daily life nursing techniques, medication administration, and resuscitation procedures and care of the critically ill patient.    

        (14) Community Nursing

        Cotent includes: Environment and health, health protection and promotion, community health protection and research methods, community health statistics and disease prevention and so on. The couse helps studetns to establish the concept of health and guide their nursing practice with modern medical mode and modern nursing ideas.

        (15) Nursing Psychology

        Content includes: A basic knowledge of psychology, the relationship between social psychological factors and diseases, and the basic theories an and methods of psychological care. The course is designed to enable students to integrate the psychological knowledge with patient psychological care in the nursing practice.

        (16) TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) Nursing 

        Content includes: The fundamentals of TCM, and the application and relationship to nursing care. The course enables the students to utilize concepts which integrate TCM with Western medicine and medical practices to deliver comprehensive and attentive care to the patient.    

        (17) Nursing Care of Mothers & Newborns

        Content includes: The nursing care of women in pregnancy, delivery and puerperium as well as neonatal development. The course also covers the issues of family planning and the promotion of women’s health. The course enables the student to use the nursing process in providing systemic monitoring and holistic nursing methods for pregnant and lying-in women, fetuses and neonates according to the physical and social psychological characteristics. The student also masters the introductory skills of health education instruction in order to conduct classes in maternal, child healthcare and family planning. 

        (18) Adult Nursing

        Content includes: The concepts, etiology, pathogenesis, nursing assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and evaluation of various diseases in adults with the common skills specific to the practice of medical, surgical, gynecological, otolaryngological, and epidemiological nursing care. The student is guided in methods to apply the acquired knowledge and nursing processes in order to provide the highest level of holistic care for a wide variety of patients.

        (19) Pediatric Nursing

        Content includes: The principles of growth and development in children, health care measures to improve the child’s physical and psychological health, the basic nursing and clinical nursing for common childhood diseases. The course is designed to enable the student to prevent illness and use the nursing process in providing holistic health care for the sick and injured child.

        (20) Emergency First Aid and Intensive Care

        Content includes: The fundamental knowledge and skills for emergent diseases and critical care conditions. The course is designed to enable students to deliver preliminary care to the acute and critical patient.       

        (21) Geriatric Nursing

        Content includes: The physical and psychological characteristics of aging and the promotion of good health in the elderly. The common geriatric illnessses, diseases and the proper care of the geriatric patient are studied. The course is designed to enable the student to provide holistic care to the older person.    

        (22) Psychiatric Nursing

        Content includes: The fundamentals of psychiatric nursing and the care of common pathological and mental disorders. The course is designed to enable the nursing student to provide holistic care to the patient with mental health problems. One-week practicum).

        (23) Nursing Skills Probation

        Content includes: Clinical probation for fundamental nursing operating skills and basic nursing skills for common diseases.

        (24) Clinical Nursing Practice and Reflection

        Content includes: Based on the use of Sim-man and real clinical cases, the course is designed to examine the abilities of judging patient problems with comprehensive health assessment skills, providing appropriate nursing service with basic nursing skills, professional clinical skills and emergency first aid skills, and making reflective thinking as well.

        (25) Nursing Ethics

        Content includes: This course introduces students to the domain of clinical ethics as a foundation for developing ethical expertise in nursing practice. The course focuses on contemporary nursing and health care issues that raise personal and professional ethical concerns. Emphasis is placed on cultural differences, current legislation, political and religious controversy, economic constraints, and professional commitment related to the resolution of the identified ethical dilemmas. The process of ethical analysis and reasoning is used to resolve representative patient and health care situations.

        (26) Health Policies

        Content includes: Current legal system in China; international health and social hygiene related policies; social insurance system and policies in China.

        II. Elective Courses    

        1. General Elective Courses    

        (1) Chinese

        Content includes: The collected sayings of pre-Qin thinkers manifesting the national spirit, and the celebrated works of some famous Chinese writers containing rich and lofty sentiments with special cultural significance. Knowledge of essays and literature retrieval, advertising skills, writing practice of naration, discussion, exposition and practical writings for different majors.

        (2) Information Technology 

         Module 1: Fundamental functional knowledge of computer hardware, including the PC and networks. Computer software, security and virus prevention issues, and applications such as the MS Windows operating system and MS Office, with an ability to create documents in MS Word and MS Excel, create and transmit email messages in MS Outlook, and “surf” the Web using the Internet Explorer browser. 

        Module 2: Demonstrate an elementary knowledge of VFP, a command of the MS Access database system with the ability to format and use tables and conduct database searches, object-oriented programming, create forms, reports and design labels, including the formulation of menus and toolbars.

        (3) Employment & Career Instruction

        Content includes: Comprehensive analysis and assessment of students by themselves. The course helps students to take a correct attitude towards employment, pay close attention to employment method of self-marketing and finally take a right post according to the situation of the market and the student itself.

        (4) Options (choose only ONE of the following courses in the 1st semester)   

        Courses: Psychological Health, Hygiene and Sanitation Laws and Regulations, Conversational and Spoken English, Literature Appreciation, Calligraphy, Drawing,  Flower Arrangement, Interior Design and Decoration, Feminine Psychology and Self-Image Design, Music Appreciation, Business Etiquette and Negotiation, Human Resource Management, Public Relation Practice, Advertising, Lecture Skills, Culture Appreciation, Heredity and Eugenics, Priciples of Esthetics, Nursing and Humanity, Nursing Etiquette, Nursing Ethics, Nursing Profession Protection, Dissertation Design and Writing, Medical and Nursing Science Data Retrieval.

        2. Cross-major Elective Courses   

        (1) Rehabilitation Nursing

        Content includes: Basic theories and skills of rehabilitation including disease prevention nursing, self-care nursing in daily life, cooperative nurse for various rehabilitation therapy, use of wheelchair and crutch, recovery nursing of patients of common diseases.

        (2) Nutrition and Die  Department: Lab-technology & Pharmacology

        Content includes: The proper metabolism of the three primary nutritive materials, the functions and requirements of these nutrients, the composition of a healthy diet, and the proper care of common diet related illnesses and diseases.    

        3. Professional Elective Courses    

        (1) Western Culture:  (in the 4th semester, Nursing Department)

        Content includes: Vocabulary, grammar and daily conversation for nursing major.

        (2) Nursing Management & Research ( in the 3rd semester, Nursing Department)

        Content includes: Fundamentals, theories, methods, skills and normal rules of nursing management, subject selection, design, document collecting, arranging and analyzing, as well as writing of nursing scientific research. The course helps students too possess the abilities for nursing management and nursing scientific research.

        (3) Skin Disease & Venereal Disease ( in the 4th semester, Nursing Department)

        Content includes: Advertising and education of prevention, nursing and health for common skin disease and venereal disease esp. the AIDS.

        (4) Nursing Professional Development ( in the 4th semester, Nursing Department)

        Content includes: Latest development, new technology and progress of nursing profession.

        (5) Sociology ( in the 4th semester, Nursing Department)

        Content includes: Analytical angle and methods of sociology, basic theories of social structure and operation, introduction to social security system as well as social problems and ways to solve.

        III. Graduation Clinical Practice

        The student will practice at a second-level hospital or above.

        IV.Requirements of Activity Curriculum

        Activity curriculum refers to those carried out through various activity projects and patterns in a well-purposed, organized and planned way. Being student-oriented and characterized by its practicality, autonomy, creativity and interestedness, these activity curriculum will incorporate the knowledge comprehensively and consist of  themes including “be thankful, be honest, be responsible, to care, to serve, to create and to develop” and so on. 

        (1)General Compulsory Activity Curriculum: Military Training, College Entrance Education, Social Practice, Security Instruction and so on;

        (2)General Elective Activity Curriculum: Various competition of recreation and sport, club activities, volunteer activities and so on;

        (3)Professional Compulsory Activity Curriculum: Speciality Introduction Ceremony, lectures related to Nursing major and so on;

        (4)Professional Elective Activity Curriculum: Professional skill contest and so on.

        Part four.Arrangements & Requirements of Practical Teaching, Military Training, Social Practice and the Second Class

        1. Practical Teaching

        Laboratory experiment both inside and outside the campus; probation of nursing skills for 2 weeks; graduation internship in the county hospitals.

        2. Military Training, Military Theory, Social Practice, the Second Class

        2-week Military Training and 1-week Military Theory after the enrollment; 1-week Social Practice in Summer Vocation enabling students to know the development of nursing major and to train the spirit of working hard; 2 periods a week for the Second Class including the content of situation education, physical education, portrayal literature appreciation and so on.

        Part five.Examination

        The examination refers to the comprehensive one of knowledge, skill and attitude. Curriculum Examination is divided into two categories, namely, examination and checking while Practical Examination consists of Basic Nursing Theory and Skill, Health Assessment and Adult Nursing. Centralized Probation Examination is given by school teachers and clinical nursing teachers from hospital. Graduation Internship Examination is organized according to the requirement of professional internship syllabus. Graduation Examination subject includes speciality practice and practical ability with the detailed courses of Fundamental Theories & Skills of Nursing, Adult Nursing, Obstetric Nursing, Nursing Care of Mothers & Newborns, TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Nursing Management, Interpersonal Communication, Geriatric Nursing. Social examination includes National Computer Rank Examination(NCRE), Practical English Test for Colleges(PRETCO A&B) and College English Test(CET 4&6).
